"Light illuminates the path to creation."
Mauro is quickly establishing himself as one Australia’s top, emerging professional talents. He is self taught, having immersed himself in still life for many years where he believes he found his passion for light and where he shot for many of Australia’s heavy weight agencies. "It is here in the studio, where I developed the grass roots of my work, still life gave me a great foundation for technique, though this is an endless evolution.” Mauro was raised by artists, his mother a world renowned painter and his father a great designer. “My brother, who is one of Australia’s leading illustrators and animators, and I, never thought twice about a career outside of a creative industry, we spent our school holidays at our parents studios, to us that is what life was”.
Inspired by the early to mid renaissance styles of the Italian Masters and the mid 20th century Masters of photography, Mauro's work reflects a skilful and passionate quality of lighting and attention to detail. His style is embodied by a sensitivity to the sublime sensuality of all things, especially, as he says, “that of the woman”, which is where he is now focusing his style, both artistically and commercially. He now shoots for some of Australia's leading beauty and cosmetic brands.
His personal work has been exhibited through out his home town, Melbourne, and has been awarded honourable mentions in both New York and London, where his work has been shortlisted in many international awards. Mauro shoots on large format film, though he also captures using a Phase one digital back, which he loves. "It all depends on the project, whether I shoot film or digital, though at the end of the day, it's all the same, as it is not the tools we use but how we use them which matters".
"To me photography is a medium ‘who's’ magic is always just eluding the artist in completely conquering its craft."
